âOh, Dani girl. What did you do now?â
It was early on a Sunday morning, a week after she and Malcolm had gotten back from the car show, and she walked into the office to find his father. She knew he always came in on Sundays to pay bills and it was the perfect time to get him to look at her car.
And the most recent damage.
âThose trash cans werenât supposed to be there,â she murmured. âCan you change out the taillight for me? Please? I donât want to get a ticket.â
âYou donât want my son to see, either,â he teased, rising from his chair. âOtherwise you would have waited until tomorrow to show this to me.â
âYeah, yeah, yeahâ¦I guess.â Together they walked out to the parking lot where she showed him the damage to the rear bumper. âI keep telling Mr. Mateo not to leave his pails so close to my drivewayâ¦â
Malcolm Sr. simply patted her on the shoulder before squatting down to look at her car. âBroken taillight, scratches on the bumper, and it looks like your rear quarter panel took a hit too.â Straightening, he glanced over at her. âYou know I canât fix all of this today.â
âI already bought the taillight. Can you switch it out for me and then we can talk about the rest? I can live with the scratches.â Her shoulders sagged. âWe both know thereâs no point in fixing them because there will only be more soon.â
Nodding, he placed an arm around her and led her back into his office. Once he had her seated, he leaned against his desk. âWant to talk about it?â
She looked at him oddly. âWe just did. I hit the trash cans.â
âThatâs not what I meant and I think you know it. Iâm talking about you and my son. I heard about your spin with the Corvette.â
Unable to help herself, she hung her head, too embarrassed to look at him. âI really screwed up. I was so focused on wanting to drive the car that I didnât really think about how it not only wasnât a good idea, but how I didnât know how to drive it.â She sighed. âNow Malcolmâs not talking to meâwonât even look at meâandâ¦â
âCan I let you in on a little secret?â
She nodded.
âMy son is overly cautious and needs to unclench.â
Okay, that was surprising.
Well, not exactly surprisingâsheâd been saying the same thing about him for years. It was just surprising to hear his own father say it.
âHe seems to think the Corvette is some sort of game changer for us, but itâs not. Donât get me wrong, it drew a lot of attention, but our business was doing fine before it and itâs going to continue to do fine once the new owner shows up to pick it up.â
Looking up at him, she frowned. âBut I messed it up! Thatâs why itâs still here, right? There was more damage to it than Malcolm actually thought and itâs all my fault! That canât look good for you guysâto have to delay delivery.
